Born in 1946 near Paulatuk in the Inuvialuit Settlement Region of the Northwest Territories, Kuptana learned to sculpt as an apprentice to his cousins Francis Ruben, Abraham Anghik Ruben and David Ruben Piqtoukun. Since he began carving for himself in 1992, Kuptana has developed his own unique voice, sculpting abstractly and using mixed media. Like Piqtoukun, Kuptana often explores traditional spiritual imagery. He often exaggerates features and makes particular use of negative space, highlighting the grotesque aspects of his subject matter . This is often counterbalanced by a subtle humour that pervades his work.
