Bears are a consistently popular subject for Inuit artists, especially from the Qikiqtaaluk Region. While other species of bears make their way north, the polar bear is the predominant bear depicted in sculpture. Known as nanuq in Inuktitut, many Inuit considered the polar bear to be "almost a man" and directly beneath humans in their intelligence.
